Biography

Early Years

Born and raised in the projects of Harlingen, Texas. He and his family struggled to make a living. At the age of seven his father lost a battle with leukemia and economic survival forced them to become migrant farm workers, following the harvest through Arkansas, Ohio, and Michigan hoeing cotton, soy bean, picking fruits and vegetables for a pittance. Living conditions were harsh, in a miserable one room shack near the fields without running water or plumbing.

Economic survival took priority over formal schooling, yet he distinguished himself academically as a debater earning Harlingen High School several awards. He earned a Principal nomination to the U.S. Naval Academy He enlisted in the United States Navy in 1979.
